EBU Members set to broadcast the most watched annual classical music concert on TV - December 28, 2009
from Karen Mazzoli/Eurovision

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s Concert

“The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s concert is ready to take the world again by storm” expresses the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) Eurovision TV director, Bjørn Erichsen.  In 2009 43 EBU Members broadcast the classical event.  2010 will see that number rising to 45 as two additional countries, Belarus and the Czech Republic  are added to the long list of Public Service Broadcasters.

For the 2009 New Year’s Concert  Norway had a staggering 56% of its market share tuning in. In Belgium a 39% market share of viewers enjoyed the concert, 40% in the Netherlands, 37% in Slovenia and high ratings in most other European countries.

“The very high market share figures demonstrate the universal appreciation for large classical music events” says Mr. Erichsen. “The EBU is happy to strengthen the collaboration with its Members in the field of classical music and contribute to the fulfilment of Public Service Broadcaster’s goals in bringing culture to an eclectic audience.”

The EBU signed a four year distribution agreement in 2009 for the TV and radio broadcast rights with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for a package of three classical concerts which includes the New Year’s Day concert, the annual summer Schönbrunn concert at Schlosspark, Vienna and  a third special concert in different international locations yearly.  This year the special concert  was held at the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre in China on 27th September.  EBU members are already proposing new exciting locations for next years’ special concert.

The concert will be broadcast to 45 EBU member broadcasters including; Albania (RTSH), Andorra (RTVA), Azerbaijan (ITV), Belarus (BTRC), Belgium (RTBF & VRT), Bosnia Herzegovina (BHRT), Bulgaria (BNT), Croatia (HRT), Cyprus (CYBC), Czech Republic (CT),  Denmark (DR), Egypt (ERTU), Estonia (ERR), Finland (YLE), France (FR2), Georgia (GTVR), Germany (ZDF), Greece (ERT), Hungary (MTV), Iceland (RUV), Italy (RAI),  Kosovo (RTK), Latvia (LTV), Lebanon (TL), Lithuania (LRT), Macedonia (MKRTV), Moldova (TRM), Montenegro (RTCG), Netherlands (NOS), Norway (NRK), Poland (TVP2), Portugal (RTP), Romania (TVR), Russia (RTR), Serbia (RTS), Slovenia (RTVSLO), Spain (RTVE), Sweden (SVT), Switzerland (SF, TSI & TSR), Turkey (TRT) and UK (BBC).
