Advertisers turn to safe channels in turbulent times
"radio is doing well"

As ad spending reports continue to chart overall declines in spending since the coronavirus pandemic, recovery yet to be felt widely. Consumer behaviors have changed, not only with Gen Z - the Zoomers. Radio advertising, a smaller slice of the advertising cake to be sure, has not, generally, been negatively affected. One could surmise, then, that radio is special. And it’s also not like TikTok.

“Yes, radio as an advertising channel is doing well,” said Norwegian Media Agency Association general director Kristin Brimi to radionytt no (March 16). “It has also done that historically, and we saw through the pandemic that this was one of the channels with the lowest business cycles, despite changing listening patterns.” In the first two months this year the group’s Media Barometer tracking ad spending showed audio media growing 30% against the same period in 2022. The whole of the Norwegian ad market fell 5.4%. (See more about media in Norway)

“It is a demanding market for advertisers now,” she continued, “and we notice a clear caution in (spending). Radio stands out as a ‘safe’ channel that provides good distribution without excessive costs.” She also noted ad inventory issues with television and online video. “And now we are experiencing new turbulent times in the economy and the industry.”

Podcasts in Norway “are an extremely small market with low distribution,” Ms Brimi added. “Several of the biggest podcasts are from advertiser-free distributors, and others are behind a pay wall, which means that the inventory for advertisers is severely limited.” For the first two months this year only 0.4% of all ad spending went to podcasts.

State broadcaster spins teen’s death to political advantage
"The line has been crossed"

Reporting suicides is difficult. Reporting the suicide of a child even more so. Horrific as it is, it must be done with a degree of grace. When the reporting agency turns the tragedy into a political screed the horror is only magnified.

In late December the editorial director of regional Polish state radio channel Radio Szczecin broadcast a report about victims of a pedophile associated with opposition political party Civic Platform (PO). Tomasz Duklanowski did not, in that report, disclose names but social media sleuths identified one as the 15 year-old son of a PO member of parliament. In mid-February, shortly before his 16th birthday, he took his own life. (See more about journalism here)

Radio Szczecin, the breadth of Polish state media and fellow travelers repeated their preferred story. The PO was a hotbed of perverts and criminals, a convenient line for the Law and Justice (PiS) party that controls the editorial output of state media. Parliamentary elections in Poland will be held later this year. The nativist, theocratic PiS is increasingly unpopular.

The program council of Radio Szczecin met on the relevant issues, including the potential dismissal of Mr. Duklanowski. “In the opinion of some of the council, including mine, it is definitely too late,” said one program council member, anonymously, quoted by media portal Wirtualnemedia (March 20). “There was a chance and we could get out of it by adopting appropriate resolutions even before this tragedy happened. Now there is a bad taste and the impression that the council acted under great pressure from the public opinion.” (See more about media in Poland here)

Several Radio Szczecin employees - including prominent morning show hosts Grzegorz Piepke and Bartlomeij Czetowicz - resigned. “The line has been crossed, behind which an unimaginable tragedy happened,” said exiting station film/theater critic Krzysztof Spor. “Instead of reflections by the management of Radio Szczecin and decisive actions decision makers avoid taking responsibility, in accordance with party interests.” According to several reports, Radio Szczecin editorial workers continue to receive threats.

Smartphones replace cars as today's status symbol, broadcasters get the message
"changing rapidly"

Radio and the automobile are inextricably intertwined. Automakers quickly learned that providing a dashboard radio receiver sold cars. Over time, sound quality improved, FM joined AM/MW, broadcasters offered traffic reports. Different forms of commerce popped up along major autoroutes, all in need of customers. The Happy Advertising People stepped in.

Automobiles, in many parts of the world, became status symbols. Driving added to a sense of independence, even luxury. The fuel prices soared. Finding parking places became a tedious chore. Cities started setting off car-free zones. Owning and using an automobile is painful. A different status symbol has arrived: the smartphone. Everybody has one; cars not so much.

In the Czech Republic Radio Dalnice was introduced in 2010 as a specialized service, primarily for those using the main east-west highway D1. The offering includes lots of traffic reports in Czech and English, a smattering of news bulletins with pop music in between. The broadcaster uses more than a dozen, mostly low-power FM transmitters adjacent to the highway. (See more about media in the Czech Republic here)

That service comes to an end next week. The broadcaster is shutting down the FM transmitters, replacing them with “Podcasts on the road,” reported Czech media portal Mediar (March 19). “The highway as we know it, like the radio you tune into with the FM receivers in your car, will cease operations at the end of March, despite the fact that we have historically achieved the highest listenership,” said Radio Dalnice owner Pohoda Media Services executive Katka Parizkova, who complained about ineffective measurement. “However, we all see this as positive news, because the situation and the needs of listeners are changing rapidly. Soon, our social networks will gradually start to publish what is coming next. Listeners will be able to choose from a wide variety of podcasts produced by us, as well as content from external creators, and the music component will be a surprise.”

RAI Isoradio has provided a similar, more extensive traffic report service in Italy since 1989. It is also known for weather reports as well as news bulletins from various RAI radio channels. Isoradio primarily uses the 103.3 FM frequency and satellite distribution.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
