Brands engage smart speakers to engage customers
the world according to pizza

For certain brands, just placing ads is so last century. They need engagement. Translating from brand-speak that means capturing granular consumer data. Every seller of anything wants engagement. Sign-up for that e-mail list or social media notification and be intwined forever.

Fast food brand champion Pizza Hut is but the latest to use couponing for building engagement. In the UK, they have gone the whole digital route using the digital radio channels that are accessed through smart-speakers. The purveyors call these “actionable audio ads.” The possibilities are endless. UK company Say It Now - “the voice assistant adtech company” - is delivering this engagement for Pizza Hut via Amazon Echo, announced via UK ad trade sheets last week (August 22). Again, more possibilities for media development. (See more about digital advertising here)

The really cool part - for Zoomers, at least - is the customer need not push a button or swipe a screen. Claim a discount by simply saying “Alexa, open Pizza Hut delivery” when the digital radio ad appears. Amazon already stores all the required data points. “We are committed to providing an easy pizza experience,” said Pizza Hut digital marketing director Nicola Keane, in a statement, “and this innovative conversational technology allows follow through on this commitment in new and exciting ways.” (See more about digital transition here)

Smart speaker usage, as applied to radio listening, has “surged” this year, according to the two most recent RAJAR audience estimates, noted RadioToday (August 5). Of course, RAJAR only began capturing smart speaker data this year. The digital listening share, a subset of the total, for smart speaker listening is “around” half of all online listening or 10.8% of all radio listening. (See more about media in the UK here)

Earlier this year, US pizza brand Domino’s pushed the technology button, figuratively, with a mobile phone app offering a “Stranger Things” trailer - based on that hit Netflix series - that uses facial recognition to order pizzas. Say it again, the possibilities are mind boggling.

Radio licenses threatened, cut mostly for money
compared to mining

Broadcast licensing was intended originally to give a bit of order to spectrum space. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) treaties gave broad strokes to this purpose. National regulators ruled over specifics, which grew to include everything from music quotas to ownership oversight. Then, of course, were the licensing fees remitted to regulators for the privilege. Local politicians added their say.

Broadcasters in three African countries are having their licenses lifted. Radio in Africa is a big deal. Listeners abound. For all the digital worship of audience “engagement” radio in Africa has long had it. (See more about media in Africa here)

Kumasi, Ghana radio station Oyerepa FM was ordered off the air this week (August 26) pending an apology for on-air comments made by a politician. Chiefs of the Kumasi Traditional Council demanded the action, offended by criticism of their role in illegal mining. Kumasi is Ghana’s second largest city, population 3.3 million.

The shutdown drew attention across the country. “The constitution provides remedies should the media defame you. You can sue, but you can't shut down,” said leading Ghanian investigative reporter Manasseh Azure Awuni, quoted by Modern Ghana (August 26). “The power that can shut down radio stations should be able to stop the Chinese and other illegal miners from destroying your lands, forests, water bodies and imperiling future generations.”

Over the last two weeks the Malawi Communications Regulatory Agency (MACRA) revoked broadcasting licenses of several radio stations, including Joy Radio, Ufulu Radio and Galaxy Radio. Cited were unpaid broadcast concession fees. The regulator set an August 22 deadline for payments, ranging from US$25,000 to US$30,000. Local media watchers deemed the actions “drastic considering the current economic conditions,” reported Broadcast Media Africa (August 24).

Last week the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) revoked licenses of dozens of public and private broadcasters “over indebtedness to the regulator,” noted news portal Niger Delta Connect (August 19). The NBC complained that the broadcasters have owed about €6.15 million since 2015. More than 50 stations have left the Nigerian airwaves. The regulator took pains to note that broadcasters considering jumping to internet streaming should think again.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
