Listeners tuning out, music channels punished most
sports remains very hot

Every radio market is unique in some way. In Spain, the radio market has a variety of special characteristics. For years, one has been stability. Not only have the biggest national broadcasters attracted the most listeners, they tend to keep their audiences year after year. Another characteristic is the rather diminutive size of the overall audience. Gross radio reach hovers just above 53% of the potential population. In the UK and Sweden, by contrast, gross reach is far higher.

The AIMC General Media Study for the April to mid-June period was released this week (July 5). Telephone interviewing was suspended for Easter week. Gross radio reach dropped to 53.8%. In general, top ranked channels suffered most. (See more about media in Spain here)

Among the general interest national channels, Cadena SER was shown with 4.1 million Monday to Friday listeners, Cope follows with 3.5 million. Both have declined year on year. Onda Cero, with 2.1 million listeners, actually gained. Public broadcaster RNE attracted just under a million listeners. Cadena SER won all the major day parts. Onda Cero placed second in the afternoon. In total, listening to the general interest channels dropped to 12.9 million, nearly 390,000 fewer.

National music channels were hit a bit harder, 11.6 million listeners, 670,000 fewer. Pop music icon Los40 Principales again led the category, up slightly one year on. Spin-off Los40 Classic gained about 5%, one of the few. Kiss FM was also up slightly. Spotify, measured separately by EGM, reaches nearly 11.5 million users. Of course, the famous Spanish sports programs available on nearly every channel gained listeners on aggregate. All-sports Radio Marca claimed 433,000 daily listeners, up 10% from the previous period.

Local stations comforted suffering community, now cancelled
lost the lease

Three local radio stations that served Uvalde, Texas have closed, reported US radio news portal Radio Insight (July 1). On May 24th, Uvalde was the site of one of the worst mass shooting incidents in the United States. A gunman with an automatic weapon took the lives of 19 children and three adults, injuring another 18 at an elementary school. The town of about 15,000 residents remains devastated.

South Texas Radio, owner of the Uvalde stations as well as two in Eagle Pass, ceased operations June 29. Uvalde station KVOU had operated since 1947, first on AM/MW then FM. The company cited sour economics in the region. It has lost tower and transmitter site leases. Terminated employees were referred to the Texas State Unemployment Office. Online station Uvalde Radio, owned separately, remains on the air.

Local newspaper Uvalde Leader-News continues to publish. (See earlier story here) Reporters have been “obstructed” by local “law enforcement officials and bikers,” noted Poynter (June 10).
