Mixed up, shook up radio world
hit the button

Every Parisian will tell you - often with great exuberance - that Paris is different. So it is as measurement institute Médiamétrie released radio audience estimates for Greater Paris - Il de France - a week after the national radio results. These surveys measured radio listening for the January - March period. Most of France and all of Paris was in lockdown.

The top line figures told the same story: radio listening plummeted. A bit more than half a million listeners disappeared year on year. The top two national channels - France Inter and RTL - remained on top in Greater Paris. Both lost audience share; France Inter down to 13.6% from 14.8%, RTL fell to 13.0% from 14.6%. (See more about media in France here)

Next in line are RMC and Europe 1; both gaining audience share. Indeed, RMC moved back into 3rd place with 7.9%, Europe 1 dropped to 4th place with 7.5%, highest in three years. Fifth place went to all-news France Info; 6.8% audience share from 4.1%. The next two spots also went to the public broadcaster Radio France stable; France Culture (6th) rose to 4.3% audience share from 3.2% and regional alternative station FIP to 3.9% from 2.1%. Hit music channel NRJ was up slightly to 3.6% audience share and sister oldies channel Nostalgie down slightly to 3.3%. (See Greater Paris audience share trend chart here)

With overall listening declining, it appears Greater Paris listeners took the opportunity to push different buttons. Skyrock, Radio Classique and RFM, in order, took noticable hits. But Fun Radio and RTL2 were slightly higher. Cherie FM was down a bit. Local station Chante France, all French vocal music, jumped to 1.6% audience share from 0.6% year on year.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
