Fast Moving Listener Behavior Is No Surprise
spinning pie Interlocking behaviors during the coronavirus and related ravages are yet to be fully understood. This is difficult for the media sphere, where decisions were often minute-to-minute before those minutes turned to mush. The "move fast and break things” ethos worshiped by hedge fund managers and executives who follow them seems not to have a second act. Media consumers noticed and, well, moved faster.

"requires a reflection"

Along with the impending disposition of M6 Group, French commercial radio is edging toward a shake-up. Depending on the outcome of negotiations, not least of which would be with the French Competition Authority, the M6 Group radio channels could be separated from the television channels. (See more about the expected M6/Bertelsmann transaction here) And there is no hiding that Lagardère Group is in transition.

Lagardère Group operates three French national radio channels; Europe 1, RMF and Virgin Radio. Europe 1 is, arguably, the most important as a statutory general interest channel. It has suffered in the Médiamétrie national radio audience estimates for several years, on which radio advertising rates are based, and 2020 ad revenues were dreadful for most French radio broadcasters. Winter quarter Médiamétrie radio audience estimates are due this week (April 15). Even though Arnaud Lagardère, company chairman, once said he’d never give up Europe 1, the channel’s future is top of mind for French media watchers. (See more about media in France here)

Lagardère Group executives met this week with Europe 1 union officials to discuss staff reductions, reported Les Echos (April 12). About 40 of 300 full-time positions would be affected. Departures would be voluntary. "The annual deficit of radio, exacerbated by the health crisis, requires a reflection on the organization,” said a company statement. Last year Europe 1 lost between €30 and €35 million, noted Les Echos.

Vivendi principal Vincent Balloré has indicated interest in Europe 1, likely to augment the right-wing TV talk channel CNews as part of Canal+. Apparently direct negotiations between M Balloré and M Lagardère have not been fruitful. And nobody knows what Amber Capital owner Joseph Oughourlian, a significant Lagardère shareholder, has in store.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
