Audience Drifting Away Focuses Broadcasters On Transitions
tuning out Surprises in audience behavior, sometimes, are not surprises at all. Trends were there all along, some say. Special circumstances pop-up all the time, say others. Broadcast management tends to prioritize the here and now, relatively speaking. That's where the media buyers live; virtually, of course. A longer view just muddies the waters.

Eco-friendly ads offered special rates by public broadcaster
"transformation"

Public broadcaster Radio France is set to offer discounts to eco-friendly advertising, noted Les Echos (November 17). Radio France national radio channels France Inter and France Info as well as regional network France Bleu will offer “privileged access” to NGOs, associations and private groups for informational announcements related to “ecological transformation.” From January such groups will be able to access the radio channels free of charge once per day per channel.

This comes as French privately-owned radio broadcasters renewed lobbying for advertising to be stripped from Radio France channels. The Radio Bureau, a collective of NRJ Group, M6 (RTL), Lagardère Group and NextRadioTV, argues that €100 million in ad revenues vaporized this year due to “the current tense economic context,” noted La Figaro (November 13). They want a firm ceiling on Radio France advertising revenues. This past spring privately-owned radio broadcasters asked the government to suspend advertising on Radio France channels. The French government is moving apace on environmental initiatives. Prime Minister Jean Castex proposed in July regulating advertising for “most polluting products.” French MPs asked for “progressive” advertising bans on automobile ads leaving “only advertising for clean vehicles.”

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
