No mystery as station audience still unreported
"generic listening" only

As we roll through this summer of disruption radio audience measurement services continue to pare down activities. Measurement in June through August periods has rarely been in judicious demand. This summer there is even less as media buyers are glued to a social media dilemma and radio sales people are either on holiday or furloughed.

RAJAR, the joint industry committee responsible for radio audience measurement in the UK, suspended in-person interviewing at the end of Q1. There had been a plan to release a revised dataset based on new population estimates. That has now been revised. (See more about measurement here) (See more about media in the UK here)

Those revisions for Q2 radio listening, essentially Q1 data updated for population changes, will only be available this week through the RAJAR trading systems. A stripped-down report - Listening in Lockdown - will be issued in August. This will “only focus on generic listening behavior and not individual stations or brands,” said a statement from spokesperson Lyndsay Ferrigan (July 28). There was no hint of when radio audience estimates will return because, well, nobody knows.

Broadcasters organizing joint digital platform, details soon
"simple and free"

A common platform was hardly a discussion point among radio broadcasters just a few short years ago. There was FM and, for some, AM/MW. The outbreak of digital platforms changed all that. Opportunities were created for some. Consumers of radio and audio content now have a wide variety of platform choices. As with every product development, those consumers do not respond well to over abundance.

Several radio broadcasters in France - from the big nationals to the smaller locals - announced the genesis of a plan to create a simpler platform environment for consumers. Essentially, they want one unified digital platform available to all listeners with any reception device. It’s an interesting idea, born, they said, from the similar yet to arrive Salto television platform. This “joint venture” could offer listeners “a simple and free digital interface” for “all radio programs and audio content on different digital devices.” (See more about digital radio here) (See more about media in France here)

There is yet no name for this platform. More details will come in September, reported Le Point (July 27), with a launch expected next year. It will offer live streams and, naturally, podcasts. The target, said M6 Group (RTL) audio managing director Régis Ravanas, is listeners “on the move,” meaning “mobile phones, voice assistants (Siri, Alexa and such) and digital vehicle dashboards.” Participants, so far, include M6 Group (RTL), public broadcaster Radio France, Lagardère Group and independent/local broadcaster association Les Indés Radios. Missing, so far, are NRJ Group, NextRadioTV, Skyrock and Radio Nova.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
