Local radio station fills practical information void
"those who feel isolated"

There is only one truly significant story, said a famous editor for a very large news organization this past week. It’s the coronavirus. Pages, web and otherwise, and broadcast minutes are filled. Social media, as usual, is filled, too, with fake news and miracle cures.

In some parts of the world the novel coronavirus - or Covid-19 - is not simply a news story about something happening half a world away. Very early Sunday morning in Italy, prime minister Giuseppe Conte ordered the whole of Lombardy and several surrounding provinces locked-down until April 3rd, reported Corriere Della Sera (March 8). Other restrictions have been ordered for the whole of Italy.

Historic parish radio station Radio Codogno, in the city of the same name, recently began 30 minute twice daily broadcasts called Radio Zona Rossa - Radio Red Zone - once at 11:00, then again at 17:00, filled with practical information, official announcements and general news for the local public, reported inews24.it (March 4). Located in Lombardy, north-central Italy, the city of Codogno has about 15,000 residents. It is the epicenter of the Italian coronavirus outbreak, quarantined since February 22nd. The Red Zone quarantine orders issued then have been superseded by the prime minister’s decree.

"A piece of the analog world still has much to say today to unite those who feel isolated and feel feelings of fear,” said Radio Codogno spokesperson Massimo Scaglioni to Vatican Radio (March 1). The station “has been providing useful information in a moment of disorientation for the entire community. However, there is also a need for people, for volunteers, who are familiar with the microphone and who can make themselves available, because even in quarantine the need for volunteering does not diminish.” (See more about media in Italy here)

“Usually I tell positive news,” said show host Luisa Vernelli, quoted by inews24.it (March 4). “At a moment I said to myself, let's tell each other how we are living, how we are facing this situation, let's give ourselves courage.” Radio Codogno’s website is similarly filled with basic information, such as how to get food.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
