Listen up, fairytales are on the air
"irresistibly contagious"

Holidays are traditional media fixtures: Special features, special programs, special ad deals. For radio broadcasters attentive to the season this usually entails walls of Christmas music. Some, too, also make a big deal of playing no Christmas music. But, through a large swath of radio broadcasting in observant areas giving a nod to Christmas is always in the plan.

Czech radio station Radio Hana is joining by offering holiday stories - Fairytale Weekends, said program director Marek Berger in a statement (December 1). They will be offered Saturday and Sunday afternoons through Advent and include modern Czech fairy tales Three Wishes for Cinderella, a Bohemian variation on the classic Cinderella story, and The Incredibly Sad Princess. Music appropriate for the stories will be included.

Radio Hana is a regional radio station serving Moravia in the east of the Czech Republic. It is a pop-oldies music station. It has been on the air since 1992 when privately-owned broadcasting rose. (See more about media in the Czech Republic here)

Once upon a time (sorry) storytelling was a significant part of radio programming. All-music programming replaced that as broadcasters decided to replace DJs and others who speak with those nifty automated music playback devices. Accountants, you see, are Charles Dickens fans.

Digital listening up during lockdowns, FM suffers
nobody in the car

In yet another land audience researchers have discovered a significant change in radio listening behavior. An IPSOS survey in the Dutch-speaking Belgian region of Flanders shows a “lockdown radio phenomenon.” It has been a gift to digital radio in its various forms.

IPSOS has been looking at radio listening in Flanders by platform for three years, which now offers data points collected between mid-September and the end of October. Working from home - compulsory in the region through the study period - trimmed 26 minutes per day from in-car listening, compared with the like period in 2019, and 45 minutes per day from listening at work.

Of those listening to radio at home during this period, time spent listening (TSL) was an average of 143 minutes per day, a year on year increase of 36%. Average TSL for home listeners increased for DAB+ and online radio channels; 17% from 8% one year on for DAB+ channels, 16% from 10% for online radio channels. TSL for FM channels dropped to 55% from 69% and cable radio effectively vanished. (See more about digital radio here)

Since TSL by platform changed little between 2018 and 2019 surveys, except a slight rise in DAB+ listening, These survey results point to an interesting possible conclusion: FM listening is attached to the automobile. Take away the car, FM listening drops.
