Radio hoax turns tragic
time to dump that promo

Stunts and hoaxes are part, sometimes a large part, of a radio DJs routine. When played out on an unsuspecting person most are inconsiderate at best and tasteless at worst. Occasionally they can be fun, entertaining and memorable for at least a day.

Two DJs for Sydney, Australia’s 2DayFM thought they had scored a big one by a phone-in prank to the London hospital where Kate, Duchess of Cambridge was recuperating from acute morning sickness. Yes, Kate is preggers and so the British Royal Family had to make the news public. By the standards of low-brow DJ stunts, this was tame; one DJ pretending to be the Queen, another Prince Charles and yet another a dog.

The Royal Family groaned at yet another practical joke at their expense. The hospital management began reviewing phone call procedures as the British public, sensitized to media issues by months of newspaper phone hacking relevations, expressed outrage. The DJs - Mel Greig and Michael Christian – apologized via Twitter but the station basked in the after-glow with “biggest royal prank ever” promos, reported Australia’s public broadcaster ABC (December 6). The radio station, owned by Southern Cross Austereo, had run the stunt past the lawyers.

All the giggling ended when the hospital nurse who took the initial phone call from the DJs was found dead Friday morning, reported UK media including the BBC and the Guardian (December 7). Suicide is suspected. The nurse had two children.

"We're very confident that we haven't done anything illegal," said Southern Cross Austereo CEO Rhys Holleran, quoted by The Australian (December 8). "What happened was incredibly tragic and we're deeply saddened and we're incredibly affected by that." Retailer Coles and telecom Telstra suspended advertising on the station. The DJ are staying off the air until the unwanted attention abates.(JMH)

Local news coverage more diverse in urban areas
My hometown station

Population density in local radio coverage areas can affect the amount and type of news and information broadcasters provide, concludes a report conducted for the Swiss Office for Communication (OFCOM) and released this week (December 5). Broadcasters licensed to urban areas are more likely to offer a broad spectrum of news content. Most private local radio stations broadcast between 20 and 25 minutes of regional information daily, slightly lower than Swiss-German public broadcaster DRS.

Private local stations licensed to more densely populated areas tend to pay more attention to politics and economic issues related to the specific coverage area with less attention to broadly regional or national issues. On average, music was 64% of these stations program content, roughly twice that of the DRS main general interest channel. Sports accounted for about 10% of information output.

The study looked at content from seven private local radio broadcasters in the central Swiss area including Aargau and Basel, all Swiss-German speaking, and excluding the Zürich area.  OFCOM under took the study between March and September 2011 as part of an evaluation of news and information requirements. The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
