Digital withdrawal leaves opportunity
Modernization moves forward anyway

The big four French commercial radio operators – NextRadioTV, NRJ Group, RTL and Lagardère – have formally withdrawn from the competition for digital radio frequencies in Paris, Marseille and Nice, said a statement from their support group Bureau de la Radio. NRJ Group and RMC owner NextRadioTV pulled out Wednesday (May 30) with RTL and Lagardère following Thursday (May 31). The announcement comes as no surprise as the big four have lobbied strongly against the current licensing – and support – regime offered by media regulator CSA.

“Despite numerous warnings and reservations about the lack of a viable economic model for digital radio as envisioned, expressed by radio operators and independent experts commissioned twice by the government, the CSA has persisted to launch a call for applications in Paris, Marseille and Nice,” said the statement, which equated digital terrestrial radio with the failure of personal mobile television.  “The future of digital radio will be via IP networks.” The call for applications closed Thursday (May 31). While the big four may be out of the running, public broadcaster Radio France and community broadcasters association SIRTI are still in. “The withdrawal of these groups…does not compromise the future success of digital radio,” said the statement from SIRTI. The decision of the big four “confirms the strong will of these groups to ban the modernization of radio and especially to sabotage the expansion of program offerings and pluralism.” (JMH)

“Car Guy” radio host attacked
listener needs a tune-up?

Radio Mayak talk-show host Sergey Aslanian was beaten and stabbed outside his Moscow apartment, reported Lenta.ru (May 29). Aslanian hosts the automobile show on Radio Mayak, the national Russian State radio channel, four days a week. Apparently, he answered a ring at his apartment building asking to speak to him Monday night (May 28). He was met by an attacker who hit him on the head and then slashed away with a knife. Aslanian’s injuries were not considered serious.

Moscow authorities are considering several possible motives for the attack. It seems Mr. Aslanian made a few comments two weeks ago about the Prophet Mohammed and a Tartarstan imam called it disrespectful. Attacks against media workers in Russia by disgruntled listeners are rare. Other reasons, not so rare. (See more on media in Russia here)

The BBC’s “car guy” Jeremy Clarkson, host of the very popular Top Gear show, regularly gets in trouble for, shall we say, inappropriate comments unrelated to automobiles. He’s never been attacked by anybody other than envious journalists. The original “Car Guys” – the wisecracking Tom and Ray Magliozzi of US public radio’s extremely popular Car Talk show -  have also avoided violence. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
