Ratings affected by media attention
"immersed in our universe"

Big city radio is different. Density, not only in terms of population, has a unique weight. So it is with the Médiamétrie January to March radio audience estimates freshly released for Il-de-France (IDF - Greater Paris). National channels must prove their might to the Paris media buyers with popular local stations carving out their space.

Undiminished during the winter months - or much of any other - is national general interest channel RTL, still number one with 13.7% audience share (Monday through Friday), up from 13.0% year on year. Earlier in the week, RTL and all radio and TV operations of the M6 Group, subsidiary of RTL Group, moved into new digs in the “chic” western Paris suburb Neuilly-sur-Seine. RTLs windowed main studio is on the street floor so visitors can see the radio stars in action. "It's the American way.” said chief executive Christopher Baldelli, quoted by La Figaro (April 25). “As soon as you come to us, you are immersed in our universe.” Sister channels RTL2 and Fun Radio are located on the third floor.

Ranked second - again - in the IDF audience estimates, national general interest public channel France Inter also moved. Audience share dropped to 12.4% from 14.0%, one year on, most of any channel. Europe 1 placed third - again - with a rather dramatic boost in audience share to 7.9% from 7.2%. The major drama for Europe 1, though, came after the national Médiamétrie figures were released last week when Lagardère chief executive Arnaud Lagardère sent away several executives and announced a yet to be revealed Plan B for Europe 1. The irony is that Plan A - bringing in talent from France Inter - appears to have worked in Paris.

Talk-based general interest and news channels did very well during the winter months. RMC (4th) was up, 7.6% from 6.5% year on year. All news public channel France Info placed 5th, 6.1% audience share from 5.1%. Even the eclectic local public channel FIP (9th) was up, 2.8% from 1.7%.

National music channels Nostalgie, Skyrock and NRJ were up a little or down a little, 6th, 7th and 8th, respectively. Radio Classique stumbled, 2.7% audience share from 3.7% one year on for 10th place. (See Médiamétrie IDF radio audience share chart here) Local stations were up, on aggregate, to 18.1% audience share from 17.2%, almost entirely led by public station FIP and rock station Oui FM.

Digital transition also means the end of the push button

Accustomed as we are in the digital age to instantaneous and disruptive changes from technologies remnants of analogue broadcasting still remain. These are slowly disappearing.

Wired broadcasting receivers in Ukraine will no longer be serviced after September 1st, said a statement from telecom Ukrtelecom, noted media portal Telekritica (April 23). Customers will no longer be able to order reception devices and the monthly fee for service will be raised from May 1st from UAH 20 (€0.63) to UAH 26 (€0.81). There aren’t many customers and Ukrtelecom seems to want those remaining to move on. (See more about media in Ukraine here)

Wired radio broadcasting systems were once widely used, particularly in the former Soviet Union, in the 1930’s. Receiving devices were installed, one to a residence, in all apartment blocks. Different programs were accessed by push-button. Volume could be adjusted. The technical reasoning at the time considered power consumption costs of huge analogue transmitters and large antenna farms. Wired radio broadcasting services effectively engrained the concept of linear broadcasting, which, for now, remains.

In Ukraine, the wired radio broadcasting service offers First Channel of National Public Broadcasting Company (NRCU), a news and general interest channel, plus “alerts in the event of an emergency, the introduction of emergency or martial law,” according to Ukrtelecom. The NRCU currently offers three radio channels on analogue broadcast platforms as well as online and satellite.
