Another FM shut-off crisis averted
money talks

Late last week there was near-panic among German radio broadcasters. Transmission supplier Media Broadcast informed more than 40 public and private broadcasters to pay outstanding service fee immediately or else. Media Broadcast was acquired by Freenet Group from Deutsche Telekom two years ago and is getting out of the FM transmission business altogether.

Customers had been directed to newcomers to the FM transmission business Uplink and Divicom, which have acquired parts of the FM transmission business effective April 1st. Those companies have raised the rates, as much as 50%, said one broadcaster. Rate negotiations with broadcasters - including public broadcasters MDR and NDR - have not, shall we say, progressed. And, too, some confusion exists about which new transmission service providers own and operate which transmitters and antennas. (See more about media in Germany here)

“As far as we can see, the FM switch on Wednesday is no longer an issue,” said a Media Broadcast spokesperson to agency dpa (April 9). The negotiation deadline has been extended until June 30th. After that date Media Broadcast is out of the FM transmission business.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
