Pop-up channels to populate the universe, streaming is next
testing, 1, 2, 3

Switzerland has become a real hot-bed of digital radio activity. Granted, DAB+ multiplexes abound, more are coming. It’s a opportunity for broadcasters wanting to get in on all that digital excitement.

Most of this action is in the Swiss-German speaking region, logical because most Swiss media buyers are in Zurich, in the Swiss-German part. Big media house Ringier has added four new DAB+ channels to its Energy group, otherwise franchised from French broadcaster NRJ Group. The three Swiss-German Energy stations will also migrate to DAB+. The new digital channels are, unsurprisingly, all-music: Classix Radio, Rockit Radio, Vintage Radio and Radio de Mar. Luna Radio, pop oldies channel replacing the existing LandLiebe Radio, will appear in January. (See more about digital radio here)

Not to be outdone in the endless quest for a digital radio solution, Swiss-German regional public broadcaster SRF is “testing” a partnership with streaming audio service Spotify, reported kleinreport.ch (December 4). Playlists from regional pop music channel SRF 3 are now available on the external platform. The idea is to reach 15 to 24 year olds “lost to radio,” said Swiss media expert Ueli Custer, who conducted market research for SRF.

Digital transition faces political hold, broadcasters not amused
too late to turn back now

Last minute efforts to derail Norway’s impending switch-over from FM radio broadcasting to digital systems (DAB) reached the Parliament this week (December 6). Several political parties want the long awaited “extinction” of FM either postponed or cancelled altogether. Broadcasters just want to get on with the inevitable, including those once sceptical.

Norway’s Culture Ministry proposed replacing FM distribution for national broadcasters with DAB multiplexes in 2011. The plan essentially failed - several Culture Ministers offering various ideas - but was brought back in 2015. The Parliament approved, setting January 11, 2017 to begin the one-year transition. Northern most counties would be first to flip the digital switch, the rest of the country following. Norway would be, then, the only country to replace FM radio with DAB. Just get on with it, said Norwegian Local Radio Association chairman Svein Larsen to Kampagne (December 4). “All stakeholders, including local radio, now has its sights set on achieving these goals and also has undertaken or is about to undertake, financial investments and other measures related to the national (switch-over).” (See more about media in Norway here)

The Green Party (MDG) wants to postpone FM switch-off and the Progress Party (FRP) wants to shut-down the shut-down.

Current Culture Minister Linda Hofstad Helleland is to be questioned by MPs on the effect of switch-over on Norway’s emergency notification system and digital coverage “holes” in northern counties.
