| ftm Radio Page - December 2, 2016Packaging audio content for online and mobile distribution is very much the rage for broadcasters. It follows the video-on-demand services model and, even, the news agency model; produce once, publish many times. Music-based content is tied up in rights contracts but many radio broadcasters produce vast quantities of speech-based content ready for extended distribution. German public broadcasting network ARD is preparing an audio-app set for mobile users “personalizable, curated and… combined in a unique way,” said ARD radio committee chairman Nathalie Wappler, quoted by German media portal dwdl.de (November 23). The audio-app will offer “situational collections” for, well, joggers and the like. All 60 regional public radio channels and the national Deutschlandradio channels will participate. Lift-off is expected in mid-2017. Private broadcasters association VPRT swiftly called the new service “incomprehensible,” in a statement (See here - in German). “The ARD has shown again that it is difficult to achieve fair competition in a dual (public-private) system.” The ARD announcement coincides with a similar, less specific plan brought forward by BBC general director Tony Hall.
