Traditional Strategies Bend As Millennials Flee
rockin' chair Radio is but another medium brought to change as its listeners adopt new ways of using it. Look what happened to newspapers; Google News. Look what happened to television; Netflix. Consumers of audio product - once known as listeners - like streaming, podcasts and having what they want when they want it. Nothing gets in the way of change.

Broadcaster cancels Jingle Bells channel
bah, humbug

Swedish public broadcaster Sveriges Radio (SR) says it has an excess in digital radio channels. Three online and DAB channels - P2 Klassiskt, P2 Världen and P3 Star - will disappear at the end of June. The official reason is “changing listener behavior,” reported radionytt.se (May 11). All three channels are brand extensions of the P2 arts and culture channel or hit music channel P3.

SR music director Anna-Karin Larsson explained that the specialty digital channels are no longer necessary. “A lot has happened when it comes to people's music consumption compared to what it looked like ten years ago. Listening is an obvious feature of people's everyday lives and the sound is in focus regardless of whether it is a part of podcasts or listening to music. Streaming services and listening to FM radio are still strong, however, we see that the audience no longer has the same need for unique, niche channels as when we started our web channels in the early 2000s.” (See more about media in Sweden here)

P2 Klassiskt is a classical music channel. P2 Världen is a web-only world music channel. P3 Star targets teenagers with hit music also available, obviously, through a mobile app.

The dedicated Christmas music channel SR Bjällerklang (Jingle Bells), available during the season, will also disappear. SR main channels P4 and P2 will increase the Christmas music output at the appropriate time.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
