Huge potential

A new web radio channel is on-the-air in Spain. The target audience is huge, more than 6 million people. Corporate radio producer Grupo S4 Media has launched XFin to serve the unemployed.

“On this station you will find employers and employees but the work goes beyond mere supply and demand to extend to legal advice and even counseling for people who are unemployed,” said morning DJ Oscar Montero, quoted by El Mundo (June 3). The station in on-the-air 24 hours a day, 6 hours being live. It is, he said, “the first station whose function is to disappear.”

“We’ve been there and know what it takes,” said DJ Mireia Faura. A portion of ad sales is being donated to social agencies supporting people out of work. After each tune played on the station a job offer is announced. When a person finds a job, she said, “it will be big news.” Station DJs take to the streets the first Monday of each month to be “closer to the people.” (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
