French Radio Listeners are Major Consumers of New Technologies

Michael Hedges October 28, 2004

More French are tuning in to radio and listening longer, according to the annual L’Année Radio report by Médiamétrie.

40.3 million French 13 years and older listen to radio each day, a 10% increase over 1993-1994. Those who listen to radio, noted Médiamétrie radio director Arnaud de Saint-Roman, “are young, active and well-educated. They consume more new technologies and particularly appreciate cultural activities.”

French radio listeners more likely own mobile phones and more often connect to the Internet than the population at large, men and persons under 50 years in particular. This connection with new technologies will please advertisers. Radio listeners more likely to compare products and services on-line, buy on-line and use on-line banking.

L’Année Radio 2003-2004 was released by Médiamétrie in Paris October 28.

A separate report on the Internet and new technologies was released a week earlier and showed that one of two French surf the Net and two-thirds who use the Internet have access to broad-band at home.

“It is premature to say that the Internet is a mass media like television or radio, but it is on the way to become one,” said François-Xavier Hussherr, General Manager of Internet and New Media at Médiamétrie.

The Internet and new media report suggests a significant difference between Net users and television watchers or radio listeners. Pointing to a ten-fold traffic increase for the SkyBlog platform between the end of 2003 and mid 2004, Médiamétrie finds that French Net users are organizing themselves into communities.
