There’s A Session Missing From UNESCO’s Conference On Press Freedom: ‘What Actions Can The UN Take To Stop Governments Arresting, Jailing, And Killing Journalists?” --- Philip Stone April 30, 2009
Despite all of the press freedom verbiage from governments around the world, the number of journalists arrested, jailed, and, yes, killed, each year is one of humanity’s disgraces. UNESCO holds a two-day meeting Saturday and Sunday to mark World Press Freedom Day May 3, but regretfully it pussyfoots around what governments are doing.
An Editors’ Survey Gushes That Newspapers Are Here To Stay Which Is Reassuring, But A More Meaningful Survey Would Have Asked Advertisers How Much Print Figures In Their Future And Newspaper Boardrooms How Little Margin Is Now Acceptable -- Then You Would Know The Future Of Newspapers --- Philip M. Stone March 29, 2007
A survey of some 435 global editors-in-chief and senior news executives says they are very optimistic about the future of newspapers. That Newsroom Barometer is swell for telling how journalists see the future of newspapers, but unfortunately, and this is going to bang on some egos, they are not the ones that count. Media In High Contrast, Very Black And White, No Grain Or Gain --- Michael Hedges April 25, 2016 - Follow on Twitter
Armed only with their digital devices, pens long ago disappearing, media workers seem less equipped to fend off the onslaught of paranoia, polarization and propaganda. Complicit authorities keep inventing new and creative ways to sideline even basic news, lest the public know too much. Where media freedom is respected, however, folks seem to get along quite well, even happier. Perhaps that's the point.
