Being Number One Means Never Having To Explain Demographics
last minute Nothing moves the ratings needle more than distribution. Without it, people can’t find you. But that’s only part of a broadcasters work. Being there, here and now with what people want is a minute-by-minute job, made always more interesting when those minutes are increasing.

The medium (wave) is the message
Analogue forever…almost

UK broadcast and telecom regulator OFCOM will begin taking applications later this year for community radio station licenses on the AM/MW band, notes Radio Today (UK) (January 11).

Could this be a policy shift? What about no more analogue radio licenses to encourage digital uptake?

Media regulators have a habit, duty actually, of encouraging spectrum usage. Even though it’s off the trendy radar, so to speak, the medium wave radio band is there, willing and able to accommodate radio channels. And receivers are generally available.

Looking carefully at the state of digital radio transition rules some regulators are extremely hesitant setting analogue – AM/MW or FM – shutoff dates, lest consumers and politicians become irritated. Allowing local and community broadcasters to remain in the analogue space while pushing national channels to digital platforms seems to be gaining traction among regulators. (JMH)
